Reconhecimento de voz como serviço em segundo plano

É possível implementar uma atividade como um serviço? Minha atividade é uma atividade de reconhecimento de voz. Quero que a atividade seja executada em segundo plano do aplicativo, verificando constantemente a voz e, quando o usuário disser um comando, ele o reconhecerá e executará a ação. Minha pergunta é ... é possível fazer isso e, em caso afirmativo, como o serviço de segundo plano pode notificar a atividade ou aplicativo atual?
