Установить RelativeLayout backgroundColor с использованием кода Java

У меня есть

<RelativeLayout xmlns:android="http://schemas.android.com/apk/res/android"
    android:layout_width="fill_parent"
    android:layout_height="fill_parent"
    android:id="@+id/mainRelativeLayout">

, и я пытаюсь настроить фон с помощью кода java (я не хочу делать это в xml) с помощью этого код в методе onCreate :

View view = (View)findViewById(R.id.mainRelativeLayout);
        view.setBackgroundColor(0xFF000000);

или в этом коде:

View view = (View)findViewById(R.id.mainRelativeLayout);
        view.setBackgroundColor(android.R.color.white);

Однако он терпит неудачу в первой строке, когда пытается найти идентификатор. В чем проблема? Спасибо
