PHP sleep() не работает

Я создаю файл php, который будет запускать событие по прошествии пяти минут. Из документов кажется, что для пятиминутного ожидания потребуется только sleep(300), но это не работает. Я протестировал весь остальной код, и он работает нормально, пока я не добавлю строку sleep.
